Considering Solar?
IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING SOLAR FOR YOUR HOME, HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE SYSTEMS AVAILABLE:

“Stand Alone Off-Grid” Solar Power System is the old school type of home solar power system. Off-grid systems are typically used in isolated areas until a utility power grid is available. This type of system relies solely on the sun for energy, and requires large banks of batteries to store the energy. These systems are unreliable, subject to weather and cloud conditions, and pricey. As of January 2010, a standalone system for a typical house could set you back as much as $40,000 or more.

The "Hybrid" - Solar and Generator Combination System
provides electricity even when the sun is not providing solar power. These "hybrid" systems have the ability to charge the battery banks through the generator. When weather conditions are unfavorable for solar power production, or when more power is needed than the solar panels are producing, a gasoline or diesel generator is activated. The generator is used to provide the power to overcome the difference between solar power available and the electricity required. This type of system also requires large banks of batteries to store the energy.
These systems are more expensive than “stand-alone” systems due to the cost of the generator and fuel, and although these systems are more reliable than the “stand alone”, the pollution factor from the generators can negate the benefits received from the clean solar energy.
These systems are typically used for remote cabins and are a common system used to provide power in third world countries.
(Webmaster's Note: This "hybrid system" is the typical solar system on No Name Key with 39 of the 43 homes using this system.  Of the remaining homes, 3 are operated on the "stand-alone" system, and 1 operates soley on a generator, with no solar in place.)

“Grid-Tie” Solar Power System for your home is actually tied into the electrical power grid where you live. Excess energy goes into the grid, making your electrical meter run backwards. This is called net-metering and any excess energy you produce gives you a credit on your power bill. This type of system does not require large banks of batteries to store the energy, as excess energy is stored on the grid. When more power is needed than the solar panels are producing, energy is withdrawn from the grid. Modern “Grid-tie” solar power systems for your home are more cost-effective, efficient and sustainable than “standalone” or “hybrid” systems.
